In this new series on Arts&Crafts hosted by Daniel Stilwell, we will unite voices from architectural and social history with architectural practitioners who engage with the Arts & Crafts in a contemporary light. Each speaker will showcase lesser-known characters and the wider artistic community within the Arts & Crafts, as well as offer freshly made views of canonically prominent architects of the time.

The talk will discuss the influence of Arts and Crafts architecture on the practice’s recent work. It will draw specifically on the work of Edwin Lutyens, Charles Voysey and Macaulay Baillie Scott as well as the wider principles of the Arts and Crafts including its use of history, precedent and archaeology. The combination of unlikely sources including both vernacular and classical buildings, humble and high crafted materials and elements from wildly different eras has informed projects including A House for Essex.
Charles Holland is an Architect, teacher and writer. He is the Principal of Charles Holland Architects and Professor of Architecture at the University of Brighton.
