New Editor and Editorial Board announced for Architectural History

A new editor and editorial board have been appointed for the Society’s principal publication, Architectural History, effective from 01 September.

The incoming Editor is Professor Mark Swenarton, Emeritus Professor of Architecture at the University of Liverpool. Mark was formerly the founding editor of the international journal Construction History (1985) and of the monthly review Architecture Today, where he was co-editor and publisher from 1989 to 2005. His books include Architecture and the Welfare State (2014), Cook’s Camden (2017) and Homes Fit for Heroes (1981/2018).

Dr Emily Mann of the Courtauld Institute of Art continues her role on the journal with the title Executive Editor.

There will also be a new, expanded team of twelve Deputy Editors, along with two Book Reviews Editors. ‘With the wide spread of subject matter and the increased number of articles that we publish in each issue, there was an urgent need to expand and diversify the Editorial Board,’ says Mark. ‘Accordingly, to complement the expertise of the existing members we have brought in specialists in a wide range of approaches, periods and regions, including North and Latin America, eastern Europe, Africa and the Muslim world, as well as the UK. With its expanded Editorial Board, the journal is in an unrivalled position to take forward the development of the discipline at a national and international level – and to deliver on the Society’s vision of “All Places, All Periods, All Welcome”.’

Among the Deputy Editors will be Architectural History's previous Lead Editor, Dr Anthony Gerbino, who has overseen the journal for the past three years, enhancing its reputation as one of the leading academic journals in the world for architectural history, and maintaining its reputation for rigorous peer-reviewed scholarship. He has also worked to broaden the journals scope to encompass post-war and contemporary topics, and architecture in all its global contexts.
