Join the SAHGB for an evening exploring unconventional architectural history research methodologies, from digital cartography and photogrammetry to oral histories, literary sources and film, researchers will share their work in short sessions followed by discussion with the panel and guests.
Building on the themes explored in SAHGB’s Annual History Workshop: Visual Representation in Architectural History, the 21st May lightning round session highlights alternative research methodologies. Selected from a competitive field of proposals, the papers explore the spread of street art and protest graffiti following the murder of George Floyd, recreate the lost red light district in Tehran and explore how Steve McQueen’s “Small Axe” films capture London’s changing cityscape and record lived experiences of the built environment between 1968 and 1984. Presenters are from the United Kingdom and the USA and their papers consider histories from the very recent past to the early 20th century.
The speakers are:
Toby Blackman, Senior Lecturer at the University of Newcastle and MA Architectural History student at Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, presenting “Steve McQueen: Site Writing Situated Knowledge in Film”
Rebekah M. Coffman, independent researcher and historian for Preserve Minneapolis presenting “Preserving Protest: Digital Cartography as Great Equalizer or Colonial Reinforcer”
Sadaf Tabatabaei, MA Architectural History student from the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London presenting “Architectural Re-imagination of the vanished red-light district of Tehran”
