Elain Harwood (1958 - 2023)
It is with immense sadness that the Society has learnt of the sudden death of Elain Harwood.
Members will know her as a leading historian of twentieth-century British architecture, one who had an extraordinary depth and range of knowledge. This she brought this to her role as senior architectural investigator at Historic England, and which she shared through the many lectures she gave, and the tours and visits she led for the SAHGB and for the Twentieth Century Society and through her many publications. These include the Pevsner City Guide to Nottingham, and the magisterial Space, Hope and Brutalism, an encyclopaedic study of post-war British architecture, for which the Society awarded its most prestigious prize, the Alice Davis Hitchcock medallion in 2016.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.
