Follow our ED&I network takeover of C20 Building of the Month for 2022

Throughout 2022, the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain’s Equality Diversity & Inclusion (ED&I) networks will be partnering with the Twentieth Century Society as part of its monthly Building of the Month feature.

The SAHGB ED&I networks – namely, the LGBTQIA+ Network, the Women Architectural Historians’ Network, the Race + Ethnicity Network, and the Disability Network – work to ensure that diverse voices in histories of the built environment are heard.

In order to support this aim, throughout 2022, the Twentieth Century Society has committed to featuring buildings that tell the stories of under-represented groups across geographies and building types.

The project will cover diverse buildings including: Azurest South, Virginia (Amaza Lee Meredith, 1938); Central Hill Estate, Crystal Palace (Rosemary Stjernstedt et al., 1966-74); the Homomonument, Amsterdam (Karin Daan, 1987); St Andrew & St George, Stevenage (Seely & Paget, 1956-60); the Keskidee Centre, Islington (Oscar Abrams, c. 1971); Bristol Hotel, Lagos (Architects’ Co-Partnership, 1955) and the Jagonari Centre, Whitechapel (Matrix, 1984-7).

Authors will include Elizabeth Darling, Ewan Harrison, Kate Macintosh, Jacqueline Taylor, Anne Thorne, Ola Uduku, Rixt Woudstra, and others. The Building of the Month feature is edited by Dr Joshua Mardell.

January’s Building of the Month (Kensal House, West London, contributor: Elizabeth Darling convenor for the Women Architectural Historians’ Network) is already online and you can read it here.

The Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain has established a number of networks based around protected characteristics as defined by the Equalities Act. Our discipline has much to do to diversify and we hope these networks will foster an atmosphere of greater equality and inclusivity. The networks are:

  • Women Architectural Historians’ Network (Convenor: Dr Elizabeth Darling, Oxford Brookes University)

  • LGBTQIA+ Network (Convenors: Dr Ewan Harrison, University of Liverpool, and Christiane Matt, University of York)

  • Race and Ethnicity Network (Convenor: vacant)

  • Disability Network (Convenor: vacant)

Please email diversity@sahgb.org.uk if you’d like to learn more about our networks and work in ED&I.

The Twentieth Century Society campaigns to save outstanding buildings and design that have shaped the British landscape since 1914.

Dr Joshua Mardell is currently an Associate Lecturer in the History of Art at the University of York and Research Collections Fellow at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. Queer Spaces: an Atlas of LGBTQIA+ Spaces & Stories, co-edited with Adam Nathaniel Furman, will be published by the RIBA in May.
