Smart, intelligent, digital, ubiquitous. The city of the future is assumed to be a site of technological innovation. However, alongside the technology of the future is the architecture of today and the heritage of the past we now seek to conserve and preserve. The city we imagine for the future then, will be a complex set of factors and components from the past, and present. Navigating this multiplicity will be key to the futures now being imagined and how we maintain our cultural traditions. Nowhere is this more evident than in the host country for this conference, India.
The site of some of the most iconic architectural heritage in the world, it is also a country of burgeoning contemporary architecture and future planning. The National Government launch its 100 Smart Cities Mission in 2015. Interestingly, this initiative does not just look at the future it accepts the context is existing cities and seeks to find ways of integrating into them and this preserving key architectural, social and cultural heritages.
This conference seeks to bring historians and conservationists into debates about the future of the city and its architecture, the importance of its past and creative ways in which the history of our built environments can mesh with their futures.
